The Spaniards founded Monterey Park in the late 18th century as the famous Mission San Gabriel Arcangel, which later became a ranch for the SanGabriel Valley. The new immigrants moved on an unnamed path that was common in Westerns that connected them to Los Angeles. This road was called Coyote Pass because it was named after Garvey, and its name is a tribute to the fact that he drove the road as a postman and later that year owned the land through which it passed.

Local authorities called the city Monterey Park, and several natural features in the area bore the name "Monterey," such as the Montereys Hills and the Monterey Trail. I was told that on the border between Montery Park and Montebello lies an area called Yokohama Village, a Japanese-American community dating back to the 1920s.

The neighborhood is now part of the city of Monterey Park, a city of the same name as Montery Park. The city then passed a law requiring all signs to be written in English, and many business owners simply reacted by moving to the adjacent Alhambra or Montereys Park or losing their businesses. Shortly before the cities were founded, Alhambra and Pasadena wanted to turn Ramona Acres into a sewage dump, so local landowners quickly organized and formed a new city. It wasn't long before Montery Park regretted its decision and withdrew, but it has since issued several ordinances, including a requirement that signs read "No English.

Monterey Park was once a thriving agricultural community and was known as Mexico's Beverly Hills, dating back to Eisenhower, but is now home to the largest concentration of Mexicans - Americans in Los Angeles County. The median home price is above the state and federal averages, more than double the average for the rest of LA. This underscores what we expect from Mexican Americans in neighboring East LA, as well as some of our favorite spots in the city of Montery Park.

With temperatures in the triple digits and humidity above 80 percent, Monterey Park can become muggy in the summer months, with temperatures as high as 90 degrees and winds of up to 100 miles per hour.

The Garvey Ranch Park Observatory is a historical museum and fully functional observatory operated by the Los Angeles Astronomical Society. Also within the city limits is the Monterey Park Museum of Natural History, a fully functioning observatory. The park also has a museum and a scale replica of the observatory itself, both part of a larger museum at the San Fernando Valley Historical Society Museum in San Bernardino.

Of course, it's not nearly as big as the Griffith Observatory, but it's a remarkable resource for a modest suburb.
